Most of you that have met Molly, our english mastiff, know that she doesn't move around much or very quickly. She is a love bug that we often say is afraid of her own shadow. She doesn't like to go outside by herself, she's scared of going out at night, company can send her hiding in the laundry room, Bill is fond of telling the story about her fear of fog. She really does spook at almost anything! While her size is intimidating, I've always figured that it was Molly we were going to need to protect from an intruder or wild animals, not the other way around. Well, I just put the little man to bed and thought I'd let Molly out before coming upstairs to edit birthday photos. I take the big girl outside and she lets out this pathetic half bark as she stares up our driveway. I don't think much about because shortly there after Grizzy comes running down the driveway and I figure that's what she's barking at. But then I notice an odd sound in the distance and as I glance at Molly, all the hair is standing up on her back. I start to head up the drive to investigate and the next thing I know this coyote bolts out of the bushes onto the drive and Molly takes off after it, she's moving so fast that all you see is a cloud of dust in her trail. She was so quick, that she actually got to the coyote and knocked it on it's butt!! It looked like it was going to be a brawl...After that it was all ciaos.... I'm yelling and running towards them, Grizzy joined the chase and they were off into the avocado grove....from the sound of it, I don't think that was the only coyote around. I always worry about the dogs if there is a pack around...
Anyway, They came back safe and sound and proud of themselves.....maybe Molly is a good guard dog after all.
